Services Trade

The firm has long-standing experience in advising Governments, regional organizations and private parties on multilateral and bilateral negotiations on trade in services.

Lawyers within the firm, individually or collectively, have been involved in assisting companies in the on-going WTO multilateral negotiations on trade in services in the areas of postal and courier services, financial services, telecoms and energy-related services.

Our lawyers have assisted clients in developing their negotiating strategies and have represented them before national authorities and EU negotiators to ensure that their strategic and commercial interests were properly taken into account. Lawyers at the firm have also regularly advised clients before relevant associations and International Organisations.

Our experience includes:

  • Advising a major European postal operator in the on-going Doha Round negotiations on postal and courier services;

  • Advising financial institutions and financial services providers on the on-going Doha Round negotiations on banking and insurance services;

  • Advising one of Europe’s biggest energy distributors on the impact of multilateral negotiations on energy services, particularly on the proposals for classification of energy services; and

  • Supporting and coordinating WTO activities on behalf of European postal operators within PostEurop and UPU.

In addition, we currently assist Governments and regional organizations in their negotiations on trade in services. In particular, we have advised a regional organization on the negotiation of its services chapter within a set of bilateral free trade negotiations. Our lawyers have also advised a WTO Member on the impact of EU data protection rules on the provision of services in the EU by third country operators.
